Breed Comparison Chart
This attractive breed looks similar to a wild Mallard duck, but with more robust bodies and brighter feathers. Originally from France, the Rouen duck is a popular meat bird typically served in high-end restaurants.

Rouen Ducks: A Premium French Meat Duck

Feather coloration of this breed closely resembles a Mallard duck. Male Rouen ducks have green heads with a white collar and a light gray body. Female Rouen ducks have a brown head with brown mottled plumage. Both sexes have a pronounced blue stripe present on their wings.

This duck is a heavy-bodied breed, but does not grow to be quite as large as Pekin ducks or Muscovy ducks. They are one of the better meat duck breeds if you'd like a bird with a manageable size and less intense growing schedule.

They are also said to have the most flavorful and tender duck meat, which makes them an ideal choice for growers that cater to niche markets or fine dining restaurants.

These ducks are slow-growers compared to other breeds, but the extra grow out time is what gives their meat a rich and unique flavor compared to commercial meat ducks.

They are not known for their egg production like the Khaki Campbell, so this duck is primarily valued for meat production. In optimal conditions, they will lay up to 180 eggs per year.

These birds are good foragers and curious about their surroundings, so they fare well as pastured poultry. They also make good pets due to their calm disposition.

These birds do not fly and typically do not hatch or raise their own young.

With optimal care, this breed can reach a mature weight between 5 to 7.25 lbs.
