Barred Rock

Product ID: 2BR
This dual-purpose chicken is a fan favorite among hobbyists and farmers. Barred Rock chickens are large birds and good egg layers, prized for their distinctive barred feather pattern. They are a beautiful and productive addition to any flock, although roosters of this breed may be loud.

Barred Rock Chicks for Sale: Productive Brown Egg Layers

This breed is one of the best cold-hardy egg layers. Egg production will slow down in winter; however, this bird will continue to lay large brown eggs if properly cared for.

With optimal care and climate conditions, their egg yield is considered very good to excellent. Growers can expect between
200-280 eggs per year. They typically do not go broody.

Barred Rock chickens are quite striking, sure to add some beauty to any flock. They have a beautiful black and white barred feather pattern, along with yellow feet and beaks. They look quite similar to Cuckoo Marans and Dominiques. However, you can tell them apart by checking the color of their feet.

This is a great beginner breed. They are friendly and docile, both with humans and other birds. If you raise other poultry like ducks, turkeys, or geese, Barred Rock hens are highly suitable for mixed flocks. They thrive in free-range or pastured poultry environments.

Historically, this breed was primarily used as a dual-purpose breed, but today they are highly valued for their egg production and beautiful plumage. If you live in a colder climate, this would be the perfect backyard chicken to add to your flock.

Hens are generally quiet, though louder than some breeds. Roosters are especially noisy, so consider this if you have close neighbors.

Average mature weight for males is 8 lbs, females average 6 lbs.

More Information About Barred Rock Chickens for Sale

What kind of comb do they have? They have a single comb. Both their comb and wattles are bright red.

What purpose do they primarily serve? Growers prize them for their reliable egg production and hardiness in cold weather. This breed is friendly and great to keep as a backyard pet, but growers historically used them as a dual-purpose bird.

Where did this breed originate? This breed was developed in New England, one of the few chicken breeds originally from the United States. This has led to their cult-like status among chicken keepers, who regard this chicken as an American classic.

What’s the difference between Barred and Plymouth Rock chickens? Barred is simply a variety of the Plymouth Rock. There are various other color varieties including blue, buff, silver penciled, and white, among others.

Are roosters of this breed a good addition to my flock? If socialized from a young age, they typically behave well and serve as good flock protectors. However, they tend to be on the noisier side.

Is this breed suitable for beginners? Yes, this is a great breed to start with if you are new to backyard poultry. They tend to sit in the middle of the pecking order, so they do well with other birds and mixed flocks.

What do baby chicks look like? Barred Rock chicks are mostly black with some white spots. They will develop their distinctive barred feather pattern as they grow.

Is this breed color sexable at hatch? Males usually have a larger, undefined white dot on their heads. In comparison, females often have a smaller, more sharply defined dot. This can help with early identification, although it is not a guaranteed method for sexing.
