This is a dual-purpose duck that was developed in 1930s Germany. The Saxony duck's lineage traces back to Pekins, Rouens, and Buffs. They are considered to be reliable egg layers with good meat yield.
Saxony Duck: Large Dual-Purpose Breed
Females have buff coloration with some creamy white plumage mixed in, as well as attractive white striping on their face.
Males have blueish gray heads with white ringed around their neck, as well as white and chestnut plumage on their bodies. Their feathers lay almost flat to their body, giving them a unique appearance.
This bird was selectively bred to provide ample meat and eggs. The Saxony is considered to be a large breed of duck, second only to the
Pekin duck. In optimal conditions, the Saxony can produce up to 175 eggs per year.
This breed is good at foraging and keeping your backyard free of insects. They are also quite friendly and gentle, so they would be suitable as a pet. A hardy and reliable bird, they are a functional addition to any flock.
These birds do not fly. They may occasionally go broody.
Mature weight between 6.5 to 8.5 bs.
