Wyandotte Chickens for Sale: Beautiful Brown Egg Layers

The Silver Laced Wyandotte produces medium to large brown eggs. Shades can range from light brown to medium brown. Because they are adaptable to cold climates, they will continue to be reliable egg layers in the winter.

With optimal care and climate conditions, growers can expect a good egg yield of 200-300 eggs per year. They typically do not go broody, but it can happen on occasion.

Silver Laced Wyandottes are widely regarded as one of the most beautiful chicken breeds. Females have silvery to white feathers, sharply outlined with black along the edges. This gives them the distinct lace pattern the breed is known for.

Males look similar, but they have long sickle shaped tail feathers, as well as more white along their hackle and saddle feathers.

This is a large, heavy-bodied breed. While they are typically used for show or egg laying purposes, their size makes them suitable as a dual-purpose bird.

This breed is cold hardy and heat tolerant. Wyandottes do particularly well in the cold due to their thick plumage and close-fitting comb. They are ideal for pastured poultry or free-range environments.

Wyandotte chickens are active, friendly, and well-mannered. This attractive breed is a great pick for beginners or hobbyists that want to start a backyard flock.

Average mature weight for males is 8.5 lbs, females average 6.5 lbs.

Where does the name Wyandotte come from? Their namesake is an homage to the Wendat Native American tribe, which had roots throughout New York State.

How many other varieties of Wyandotte are there? There are 9 color varieties accepted by the APA, including Silver Penciled, Blue Laced, and Golden Laced.

What kind of comb does this breed have? A rose comb, perfect for cold weather. On rare occasions, a single comb can occur due to a recessive gene.

Would a rooster of this breed be right for my flock? That depends, but in general, Wyandotte chickens can be friendly roosters if socialized properly from a young age.

Are they hardy in all climates? They are great in cold weather, but may need extra care in hot weather to ensure they stay cool. Their thick plumage can cause them to overheat when temperatures rise.

Is there a bantam variety of this breed? Yes, this breed does have a bantam counterpart, but we do not currently sell them at this time.

When do Silver Laced Wyandottes start laying? They typically start laying eggs between 20-22 weeks, or approximately 6 months of age. This is highly dependent on their genetics, nutrition, as well as the time of year you are raising your chickens.
