The White Crested duck is a classic breed with a history that spans several centuries. Their fluffy white crest is a distinctive feature that sets them apart from other white duck breeds. The Crested is a popular ornamental breed.

White Crested Duck: Fluffy Crested Breed

This bird has beautiful stark white plumage with orange shanks, feet, and bills. They are a medium-sized duck. Their most unique trait is the fluffy crest of feathers atop their head, giving them a regal and charming look.

The fluffy pom pom was a genetic mutation that breeders capitalized on over several years of selective breeding. To create the breed, growers crossed Crested ducks with ducks that have white plumage. The crest may vary in size, and take some time to fully develop.

When it comes to egg production, the Crested duck is not as prolific as other laying duck breeds. In optimal conditions, the White Crested can lay between 100-130 eggs per year. They are not likely to go broody.

While they can be used for egg or meat production, this duck breed is mostly prized as a pet or for show and ornamental purposes. Personality wise, they tend to be more on the skittish side. With the right setup, this breed will thrive in most climate conditions.

These birds do not fly. They usually do not hatch or raise their own young.

Mature weight between 6 to 7.25 lbs.

Can White Crested ducks fly? No, they are only able to jump fly short distances.

What do ducklings look like? Crested duck ducklings have fluffy yellow down. At hatch, they may already have signs of a crest on their head, but it will likely be a small tuft. As their adult feathers grow in, the crest will become more prominent.

What are the origins of this breed? The existence of the Crested can be traced back several centuries, all the way to the mid-1600s. Dutch painters often depicted this breed in their work, as their fluffy pom poms were a distinct and eye-catching feature.

Is this duck hardy? This breed is more delicate than other duck breeds due to the way their skull is structured. It's not recommended to try breeding these birds at home; they are best ordered directly from a hatchery with optimal breeding programs in place.

Will all of them have a crest? No, they hatch with about a 2:1 ratio of birds having a crest. The size and development of the crest depends on each individual bird.

Are they recognized by the American Poultry Association? Yes, they were recognized in 1874, under the Medium Class.
