Asher Grey Chicks for Sale: Beautiful Brown Egg Layer

This breed is a great producer of large brown eggs, which are typically on the lighter side of brown. They are ranked among our best egg laying chickens, and will continue to lay in cold weather.

With optimal care and climate conditions, they can lay between 280-300 eggs per year. They typically do not go broody.

Asher Grey chickens are somewhat similar in appearance to Plymouth Blue Rocks, but with more intensity to their coloration.

This chicken breed has very dark features around their eyes, head, and hackles, which fades out into a beautiful slate grey. They have dark grey beaks and feat, which gives them an almost monochromatic look.

FAQs About Asher Grey Chicks for Sale

When do Asher Grey chickens start laying eggs? They start laying around 22 to 24 weeks, or about 6 months. This also depends on the time of year they were raised; chickens raised in the fall are more likely to start laying consistently at maturity than chickens raised in the spring.

What environment is best for Asher Greys? They do lay enough eggs for high production needs, although this breed is more suited to backyard flocks and homesteads. Other layers like Sex Links and Leghorns have a better feed conversion ratio, which makes them ideal for commercial production.

What is the parent stock of this breed? Asher Greys do have Rhode Island Red in their parent stock, which is a big contributor to their excellent egg production.

Does this egg layer breed true? No, most crosses do not breed true. Hybrids are generally bred for traits like egg production or egg color. First generation crosses receive those desirable attributes from the parent stock, but the second generation will generally not produce the same results.

Is this chicken breed similar to the Blue Plymouth Rock? They do look similar in appearance, although their lineage is not the same. Asher Greys are slightly better egg producers.

Is this one of your popular breeds? Yes, this breed is a common choice for backyard growers. They are also featured in our Rainbow Egg Assortment, although their inclusion in the assortment is not guaranteed and dependent on current availability.
