Chocolate Egger Chicks

Product ID: 2CHE
Chocolate Eggers are a hybrid breed developed for rich, dark brown egg color and strong egg-laying abilities. With Black Copper Marans and Rhode Island Reds in their parent stock, this beautiful hybrid layer makes for a great backyard chicken.

Chocolate Egger Chicks for Sale: Dark Brown Eggs

These birds lay large, dark brown to deep maroon eggs, often described as chocolate-colored, making them a favorite for chicken keepers that desire a colorful egg basket.

With optimal care, this breed is a great egg layer, producing between 250-300 eggs per year. While egg production will slow down in the winter, they will continue to lay if provided with a high-quality diet and adequate coop conditions. In most cases, they will not go broody.

Because they are a hybrid, there will be variation in their appearance, even with birds from the same clutch. This variation in plumage color is due to breeding practices, which prioritize consistent egg color over plumage color.

Generally, they resemble Black Copper Marans, with reddish orange feathers on their head and hackles, fading out to a deep brown or black. Chocolate Egger chicks are typically either all black or reddish orange with black spots.

To achieve their signature traits, Rhode Island Reds are used for egg laying abilities, while Black Copper Marans are used to create the chocolate egg color.

Brown eggs are caused by the pigment protoporphyrin, and the intensity of that color is determined by how much of that pigment is in the hen's genetics.

This breed is great for a backyard setting, as they are hardy and suitable to a variety of conditions. Complete your rainbow egg basket with these dark eggs that are highly unique.

Average mature weight for males is 6 lbs, while females average 5 lbs.

FAQs About Chocolate Egger Chickens

Are these birds similar to Easter Eggers or Olive Eggers? They are all hybrid chickens bred for unique egg colors, but Chocolate Eggers are selected for rich, dark brown eggs. Easter Eggers typically lay blue or green eggs, while Olive Eggers usually lay olive-colored eggs.

Are they recognized by the APA? No, hybrids are usually not recognized by the Standard of Perfection, although they do make some exceptions based on history, significance, and unique traits of the breed.

Is their egg color consistent? Most growers will observe deep chocolate brown eggs, but hybrids can be unpredictable in their genetics. We cannot guarantee the exact color egg your chicken will lay.

What breeds are included in the parent stock? Our breed is a cross between a Rhode Island Red and a Black Copper Marans, chosen for both egg color and egg laying ability.

Why can't I breed two Chocolate Egger chickens together to raise baby chicks? This phenomenon is known as hybrid vigor. When you cross two heritage breeds, the offspring inherit and enhance the good traits of the parents. However, subsequent generations do not receive the same desirable attributes.

What is unique about dark brown chicken eggs? All brown eggs receive their color from a pigment called protoporphyrin, which deposits on the shell as the egg forms. What makes dark brown (or chocolate-colored) eggs unique is the higher concentration of this pigment. Certain chicken breeds have been selectively bred to deposit more pigment, which gives their eggs a much darker, richer brown color.

When do Chocolate Eggers start laying eggs? They typically start laying between 22-24 weeks, or about 6 months of age. This also depends on the time of year you are raising your chicks, the amount of daylight they are receiving, and local climate conditions.
