Americana

Product ID: 2AR
The Americana is a hybrid cross between an Araucana chicken and Ameraucana chicken. These unique birds produce colored eggs that are typically shades of blue. They have charming muffs and docile, easygoing personalities. Their close combs make them adaptable to cold climates.

Americana Chickens: Hardy Blue Egg Layers

In most cases, this breed will lay large blue eggs, but it is possible they may lay green eggs. Occasionally they may lay eggs with a tan or pinkish color.

With optimal care and climate conditions, Americanas are good layers, but not as prolific as other high-production breeds. Growers can expect good yield between 200-250 eggs per year. They typically do not go broody.

Due to variations present in the breeder flock, these birds come in a wide array of colors and patterns. You’ll rarely find two birds that look exactly the same. Some Americanas will be multi-colored with a combination of white, brown, red, or black feathers. Some chickens may even have blue or gray plumage.

Their most attractive feature is the tufts of feathers on their neck and face. These feathers give them the appearance of fluffy cheeks, referred to as "muffs." Even as baby chicks, they will likely have muffs already developing.

These birds are active and friendly, making them an ideal choice for hobbyists that raise backyard chickens. Americanas are well known for their docile personalities and adaptability.

They will thrive in a free-range environment. This breed is very cold-hardy and will tolerate heat.

Average mature weight for males is 5.5 lbs, females average 4.5 lbs.

Quick Facts About Americana Chickens

Is this breed recognized by the American Poultry Association (APA)? No. This is a hybrid chicken, so they do not have strict breed standards or predictable genetics like purebred chickens.

How did this breed come about? They are developed from both Araucanas and Ameraucanas, which share ancestry with the Easter Egger chicken. Both Araucanas and Ameraucanas are recognized breeds by the APA.

Do chickens that lay blue eggs always lay blue eggs?
That depends on the traits that your chicken inherits from the parent stock, as well as whether they are a hybrid or purebred chicken. Each hen has unique genetics, and because they are a cross, it's impossible to determine the exact color egg they will lay.

What makes chickens that lay colored eggs so special? Colorful eggs (whether brown, blue, green, etc.) are all created by pigments deposited by the hen during ovulation. The type of pigment, as well as the intensity of the color, are all determined by genetics.

What do Americana chicks look like? It's difficult to know what to expect, as they all look different at hatch and adulthood. Your chicken could be gray, red, multicolored, or even striped. They typically do have muffs, even as baby chicks.

What kind of comb does this breed have? They have a pea comb. In addition to their fluffy plumage, their close fitting comb helps them out in the cold weather.
