Americana

Product ID: 2AR
The Americana is a hybrid cross between an Araucana chicken and Ameraucana chicken. These unique birds produce colored eggs that are typically shades of blue. They have charming muffs and docile, easygoing personalities. Their close combs make them adaptable to cold climates.

Americana Chicks for Sale: Hardy Blue Egg Layers

In most cases, this breed will lay large blue eggs, but it's possible they may lay green eggs. It's rare, but growers may observe eggs with a tan or pinkish color. Whatever color your chicken lays for the first time will be the color it lays for its lifetime.

If properly cared for, Americana chickens are good layers, but not as prolific as other high-production breeds. Growers can expect good yield between 200-250 eggs per year. They typically do not go broody.

They are a cross, so these birds will present with a wide array of colors and patterns. You’ll rarely find two birds that look exactly the same. Some chickens will be multi-colored with a combination of white, brown, red, or black feathers. In other cases, they may even have blue or gray plumage.

Their most attractive feature are their muffs and beards. These feathers give them the appearance of fluffy cheeks. Even as baby chicks, they will likely have muffs already developing.

Americana chickens are active and often have friendly personalities, making them ideal for small backyard flocks and hobby farms. Cold-hardy and tolerant of heat, this is a great beginner-friendly breed.

Average mature weight for males is 5.5 lbs, females average 4.5 lbs.

FAQs About Americana Chickens for Sale

Is this breed recognized by the American Poultry Association (APA)? No. This is a hybrid chicken, so they do not have strict breed standards or predictable genetics like purebred chickens.

How did this breed come about? Breeders developed them by crossing Araucanas and Ameraucanas, which share ancestry with the Easter Egger chicken. The APA recognizes Araucana and Ameraucana chickens as breeds.

Will this chicken lay blue eggs? That depends on the traits that your chicken inherits from the parent stock. Each hen has unique genetics, and because they are a cross, it's impossible to determine the exact color egg they will lay. Their eggs are typically blue, but we do not guarantee egg color.

What makes chickens that lay colored eggs so special? Colorful eggs (whether brown, blue, green, etc.) are all created by pigments deposited by the hen during ovulation. The type of pigment, as well as the intensity of the color, are all determined by genetics.

What do Americana chicks look like? It's difficult to know what to expect, as they all look different as day-old chicks. Your chicken could be gray, red, multicolored, or even striped. They typically do have muffs, even as baby chicks.

What kind of comb does this breed have? They have a pea comb. In addition to their fluffy plumage, their close-fitting comb helps them out in the cold weather.
