The Jumbo Pekin duck is 1 to 2 pounds larger than the White Pekin duck once it reaches maturity, making them the largest strain of Pekin on the market. This fast-growing meat bird is ideal for commercial farms and meat pens.

Jumbo Pekins: The Largest Pekin Duck

Aside from their additional size, this breed is very similar in appearance to White Pekins. These birds have classic white feathers with orange beaks and shanks.

The Jumbo variety is selectively bred for its large size and high meat yield, making them one of the best duck breeds for meat production.

They take a bit longer to reach full size than the White Pekin, but they are still considered to be fast-growers. The males reach about 11 pounds and females 9.5 pounds in three months.

In optimal conditions, growers can expect this breed to produce 140-175 eggs per year. These ducks produce excellent tasting eggs with large yolks. For bakers that want to add a unique richness to their cakes and pastries, consider using duck eggs.

These birds do not fly. These birds are not natural mothers and are unlikely to go broody. Due to their conformation, they are not suitable as show birds.

Ideal processing times are at 7, 12.5, and 18 weeks for minimal pin feathers. With optimal care, this breed can reach a mature weight between 9 to 13.5 lbs.

Quick Facts About Jumbo Pekin Ducks

What is the difference between Jumbo and White Pekin ducks? At maturity, Jumbo pekin ducks are a few pounds larger. Other than that, the two varieties are nearly identical in appearance.

How did this breed come about? Jumbo Pekins are not a separate breed, but the result of careful breeding of White Pekins that display desirable attributes. Typically, a large male is bred with a medium-sized female that is fertile and produces a lot of eggs. Many of their offspring will be of the Jumbo variety.

What is their temperament like? Generally, they are docile and calm, especially if handled and socialized at a young age.

Could I keep a Pekin as a pet? They would be suitable as a pet with careful management of their diet, but their lifespan tends to be shorter than other duck breeds due to their large size. With optimal care, they can live about 5-8 years.

What will my Jumbo Pekin ducklings look like? Baby ducks are yellow and downy. They will develop their signature white plumage as their adult feathers develop.

Do I need to have a pond to keep ducks? You don't necessarily have to have a pond to keep ducks, but some kind of water source for recreation is recommended. A large stock tank or kiddie pool should provide them with the ability to submerge their bills and bathe properly.

What are the other benefits of keeping this breed? They are primarily used for meat, but they make a great addition to homesteads for other reasons. They are great for weeding and insect control, companionship, and their eggs are more nutrient-dense than chicken eggs.

Does this breed have any health issues? Like most heavy-bodied breeds, they need careful management of their feed intake to prevent leg and heart issues. Niacin should be introduced when they are ducklings to promote strong legs and healthy development.
