Originally developed in the Czech Republic, this hybrid is a cross between a Copper Marans and a Barred Rock. They are hardy, reliable egg layers that produce dark, chocolatey brown eggs. The Mystic Marans also has gorgeous, rich plumage to complement their exquisitely dark eggs.
Mystic Marans: Chocolate Egg Layer
This breed produces large, very dark brown eggs. Their eggs are much richer in color than other brown egg layers. Eggs may even have a reddish or deep plum shade to them.
With optimal care and climate conditions, this chicken breed is regarded as a good egg layer. Growers can expect between
200-250 eggs per year. They typically do not go broody.
Every bird has a slightly different and unique appearance due to variations in the parent stock.
Females usually have deep black feathers with some brown highlights underneath. In the sunlight they may have a green or purple iridescent sheen. They may be feather footed or clean legged, but they tend to have feathered feet more often than not.
Males have similar coloration to females, but they may have more reddish brown mixed in with their feathers. They typically have a more pronounced sheen in the sunlight. They also may have a barred feather pattern present on parts of their neck and torso.
A hardy and adaptable breed, this laying hen would be suitable as pastured or free-range chickens. They are cold-hardy and heat tolerant, so they will fare well in a variety of climates.
Mystic Marans are a fun, productive addition to any backyard flock. This breed is an ideal choice for growers that are looking for a stunning bird that produces beautiful dark eggs.
Average mature weight for males is 6.5 lbs, females average 5.5 lbs.
