Standard Bronze turkeys are a slow-growing heritage breed, popular within pastured poultry operations. While they are similar in appearance to the Broad Breasted Bronze, they are about one third the size and retain more of their natural instincts.

Standard Bronze Heritage Turkey for Sale

Unlike commercial turkeys bred for rapid growth, Standard Bronze turkeys grow at a slow, natural pace. They do not offer the most competitive feed conversion rate, but they are low-maintenance, hardy, and excellent at foraging.

Standard Bronze turkeys have a rich and colorful history. They originated in colonial America from crosses between domesticated European turkeys and wild Eastern turkeys native to the United States.

This ancestry produced a larger, hardier bird with the classic bronze sheen that defines the breed today. In the early 20th century, the Broad Breasted Bronze turkey was developed from larger strains of these birds to meet commercial demand.

Similar to the commercial Broad Breasted variety, they have striking bronze and copper-toned feathers with an iridescent sheen, making them a visually striking turkey breed.

While they are not the largest turkey on the market, they are among the largest heritage turkeys. Their flavorful, high-quality meat is highly sought after in niche markets. An ideal choice for farmers that want to offer a premium product.

Their ability to reproduce naturally sets them apart from commercial breeds, ensuring a level of self-sufficiency for small farms and homesteaders.

While they take longer to reach market weight, they are a perfect choice for pasture-based poultry operations and small farms looking to offer a heritage turkey with deep historical roots.

With optimal care and climate conditions, growers can expect toms to reach 25 to 36 lbs and hens to reach 16 to 20 lbs.
