Olive Egger

Product ID: 2OE
Thanks to their breeder stock, this hybrid layer comes in a wide array of colors and patterns. The Olive Egger chicken is typically a cross between a Cuckoo Maran and an Americana. Their signature olive green egg color is achieved by crossing dark brown egg laying chickens with blue egg laying chickens.

Olive Eggers: Unique Green Eggs

The Oliver Egger chicken lays large green colored eggs. Most commonly, growers can expect to see earthy shades ranging from sage to olive colored eggs. Because they are a cross, on rare occasions it is possible your chicken will lay brown, blue, or even light pink eggs instead.

With optimal care and climate conditions, growers can expect good egg yield between 200-300 eggs per year. Olive Egger hens typically do no go broody.

Every bird is one-of-a-kind. They come in all sorts of unique colors and it’s rare for any two birds to look exactly the same. This is because they are a cross and they inherit different traits from the parent breeds.

This unique bird may have some combination of gray, brown, or black feathers. Plumage may be speckled or mottled with a variety of patterns. Even their comb style will vary from bird to bird. They typically have a muff, and may even have feathered feet.

This laying hen would be suitable for free-range or pastured poultry settings. This chicken breed is cold-hardy and heat tolerant, so they will thrive in a variety of climates.

This breed is a good choice for beginners that are raising chickens for the first time. They are highly adaptable and have friendly personalities. A perfect mix of beauty and productivity.

Average mature weight for males is 7 lbs, females average 5.5 lbs.

Quick Facts About Olive Egger Chickens

What will my Olive Egger chicken look like? There is no way to determine exactly what your chicken will look like because they are a cross. Appearance can vary greatly from bird to bird.

Is this breed recognized by the APA? No, they are not recognized. They are a hybrid chicken and have not developed a breed standard yet. Because they are a relatively new breed, they do not breed true.

What do Olive Egger chicks look like? Similar to adults, their appearance can vary. Since there is no standard set of breed characteristics, they could be black, blue, or brown. Sometimes they might even be pale gray or white.

Are Olive Egger roosters a good addition to my flock? If your zone allows it, these roosters can be good flock protectors. This is a friendly breed, so roosters typically remain docile if owners socialize them properly from a young age.

What climate does this breed thrive in? This breed does great in the cold, but they will tolerate hot climates as well.

What is the difference between Olive Eggers and Easter Eggers? While there are some similarities, the main difference is egg color. While not a guarantee, Olive Egger chickens consistently lay rich olive green eggs, and Easter Eggers typically lay pastel blues and greens. That's because the dark brown egg gene is not present in Easter Egger breeding lines.
