Cornish Cross Chickens: The Fastest Growing Meat Bird

Also known as the Cornish X or Cornish Rocks, our Cornish Cross chicks for sale remain a top selling meat bird for good reason. For growers that value quick turnaround and maximum meat yield, this breed is the industry standard for fast and efficient meat production.

This meat bird a hybrid chicken; their parent stock includes Cornish and White Plymouth Rocks. Our strain has been carefully bred and managed over the years to produce the best possible results. Their strong genetics provide them with excellent livability and strong legs, delivering a consistent and highly reliable meat bird.

An advantage of the breed is that they grow uniformly and offer full, plump conformation. For growers that value tender, high-quality breast meat, this breed offers maximum white meat yield.

At 6 to 8 weeks, Cornish Cross chickens can reach a processed weight of 4.5 to 6 pounds. It's possible for higher weights to be obtained, depending on the grow out period as well as the quality of care. With a well-managed feeding program, some of our customers have reported processed weights of 10 to 14 pounds for roasters and capons in a 10 to 14 week period.

If you'd like to process your birds sooner or cater to different markets, Cornish Cross broilers can be processed at just 4 weeks for Cornish hens. Between 28 to 38 days, growers can yield a processed bird of 1 to 2 lbs.

For best results, we recommend starting your Cornish Cross chicks on a 23 to 25% protein starter feed for the first two weeks. After two weeks, switch to a 20 to 22% protein grower feed. FAQs About Cornish Cross Chickens

What are the benefits of raising a Cornish compared to alternative broilers? Cornish chickens reach market weight faster, and also achieve higher weights. If quick turnaround isn't a priority, our moderate growing meat birds are popular within niche markets. The Red Sasso is our second most popular meat chicken.

Do Cornish Cross chickens lay eggs? As hybrids, these birds do not breed true, and due to their size and conformation, they are typically unable to breed naturally. These birds are not suitable as egg layers.

Can I raise my Cornish Cross meat birds on pasture? Yes, this breed can be raised outdoors if given proper care. Many of our customers raise their Cornish in chicken tractors, following a rotational grazing system. We recommend waiting at least 3-4 weeks before putting your birds on pasture, and ensuring that the temperatures are ideal.

Do you offer nationwide shipping? Yes, our Cornish is available nationwide on a year-round basis to keep growers supplied with high-quality meat birds. While many order their baby chicks in the spring, some opt to raise them later in the year during the fall.

Are there any special care requirements for the breed? We recommend keeping them on a feeding schedule to prevent health issues. If you need more information, reference our feed conversion and nutrition charts linked in the description above.

How long should I keep my birds until I process them? It depends on how large you want your birds. If you follow our feeding recommedations at full feed you can use the feed conversion chart to determine how long to keep your birds.
