Bantam Chickens

In some cases, bigger is not always better. Bantam chickens are a small variety of poultry, sometimes referred to as mini chickens. They lay smaller eggs and require less space and maintenance than larger varieties, which makes them a great choice for beginners or backyard hobbyists with smaller coops.

Minimum of 15 chicks per order.

All About Miniature Chickens

Bantam chickens are actually a category of chicken, and not a breed in itself. This tiny variety of poultry typically weighs no more than 2 lbs. Many types of ducks and chickens have a "bantam" counterpart, which is just a smaller version of the same breed.

To make a mini chicken of a standard-size breed, breeders will selectively breed large chickens with smaller varieties. Once the desired look is achieved, they will then breed the offspring for several generations to perfect the size while maintaining breed standards.

Some chickens are considered a true bantam breed, which means there is no standard-size version. Silver Sebrights and Mille Fleur d'Uccles are good examples of a true bantam.

These birds are not known for high egg production, and bantam eggs are about half the size of a standard chicken egg. The taste of the eggs are still delicious, but you will need to use at least two eggs in baking recipes to keep the ratios correct.

Caring for Bantam Chickens

Small chicken breeds are great for backyard flocks with limited space, but it’s important to remember that small chickens are not as hardy as other poultry breeds. These birds are best suited to warmer climates, and they do not fare well in extreme cold or extreme heat. In extreme temperatures, monitor your chickens for frostbite or heat stress.

These small birds are also more susceptible to predators. If choosing to free range your birds, we recommend having some predator prevention in place to keep them safe, especially from hawks.

They can be raised alongside standard-size chickens, but due to their small size, extra care will need to be taken to ensure there is no excessive bullying among the flock.
