Originally developed in the Czech Republic, this hybrid is a cross between a Copper Marans and a Barred Rock. They are hardy, reliable egg layers that produce dark, chocolatey brown eggs. The Mystic Marans also has gorgeous, rich plumage to complement their exquisitely dark eggs.

Mystic Marans lay one of the most sought-after egg colors. These beautiful chocolate eggs add beautiful contrast to your egg basket. There are several other color variations of the Marans breed, including Black Copper Marans and Cuckoo Marans.

Chickens that lay dark brown eggs deposit higher levels of the pigment protoporphyrin onto the eggshell. When there is excess or uneven application of this pigment, the egg may even come out speckled. Other breeds that lay dark eggs include Welsummers, Chocolate Eggers, and Barnevelders.

Aside from producing gorgeous eggs, this breed is calm and has an easy-going demeanor that makes them perfect for backyard flocks. They also get along well with other breeds, so this chicken is suitable for mixed flocks. They thrive in free range or pastured poultry environments.
