Sapphire Sky

Product ID: 2SKY
This new hybrid is quickly becoming a popular backyard chicken among hobbyists and small farmers. The Sapphire Sky has unique, eye-catching plumage and produces beautiful green eggs. This breed is similar in appearance to the Sapphire Gem.

Sapphire Sky: Hybrid Green Egg Layer

This breed produces large olive-green eggs. Because they are a cross, there could be some variation in the egg color they produce. This breed typically lays olive green eggs, but they could be tan, light brown, or potentially even blue eggs.

With optimal care and climate conditions, growers can expect good egg yield between 250-260 eggs per year. They typically do not go broody, but occasionally they do set.

The Sapphire Sky is a truly beautiful chicken breed. They are a hybrid cross between a Barred Plymouth Rock and a Blue Plymouth Rock. Their plumage is a beautiful grey color, often referred to as blue or lavender. In the sunlight, their feathers may display an iridescent quality. Their tufted crowns, or "mohawks," give them a unique appearance.

Females have light blue plumage, accented by darker blue feathers around their head, neck, and chest. Males have similar coloration, but may have more pronounced barred feathers, as well as more contrast between their dark and light feathers.

Adaptable, active, and curious, this breed will do well as free-range or pastured chicken. This breed is cold-hardy and heat tolerant, so they will thrive in a variety of climates.

These birds have a friendly and easy-going nature. They are a great choice for growers who want to add a well-mannered bird in their flock.

Average mature weight for males is 6.5 lbs, females average 5.5 lbs.

Quick Facts About Sapphire Sky Chickens

What chickens lay green eggs? There are several other chicken breeds that lay green eggs, including Easter Eggers, Olive Eggers, and Legbars.

What is so unique about the Sapphire Sky chicken egg color? To create a green egg, you must cross a brown egg layer with a blue egg layer. This hybrid is the result of two brown egg layers; Barred Plymouth Rocks, and Blue Plymouth Rocks. However, Blue Rocks have Blue Andalusian in their parent stock, which allows them to pass down the blue egg laying gene.

Is this breed recognized by the APA? No, hybrid chickens without a standardized genetic line are not admitted into the Standard of Perfection by the APA.

What's the difference between this breed and an Olive Egger chicken? While they do lay similar colored eggs, these breeds both have different parent stock. However, both of them are a hybrid, so neither one will breed true, and the green egg color is not a guarantee.

What do Sapphire Sky chicks look like? They are typically grey or black, with darker feathers on their head and torso. Their beautiful color continues to grow and develop as their adult feathers come in.

Is this a beginner-friendly breed?
Yes, we highly recommend them for backyard flocks, both for their beautiful colored eggs and friendly personalities.
